Ready for battle over Tesco plans

A CAMPAIGN group is gearing up for a battle against plans to build a new Tesco store in Ashtead later this month.

The Save Ashtead’s Village Environment group, which is working with the Ashtead Residents’ Association, will be putting its case forward at a public planning inquiry on July 20.

The inquiry, due to last seven days, relates to two separate plans submitted by Tesco to build a new supermarket at the former Esso site in The Street. Both sets of plans had been previously rejected by Mole Valley District Council.

Between them SAVE and the Residents’ Association raised more than £25,000 to hire a planning advisor and a barrister as well as to commission reports from a transport consultant, noise specialist, tree expert and a leading expert on sustainability.

Paul Le Versha, the chairman of the Residents’ Association, hopes the plans will be rejected on appeal.
