Why on earth do we need another Tesco anyhow? We have one on Craddocks Avenue and another just down the road in Leatherhead. There is a Co-operative in the Village in addition to the independents – Surely that is sufficient?!
It seems that these ‘Giant’ companies are trying to muscle in everywhere and although we are the ‘little peole’, together we can stand against them just as big!
Just wanted to put in a note of support, having just seen the issue featured on the London edition of the BBC news this evening. I am a regular visitor to friends and family in the area and have been for several decades, I love Ashtead and I am pleased to see you all defending it.
Tescos are greed-driven swine who care not a jot for the local village, and we should fight them with everything we have. They are like the McDonalds of the UK, over-reaching their welcome and obsessed with growth and monopoly at all costs, giving very little back to the local economy other than the closure of all the village shops that contribute towards Ashtead’s unique character.
I had no idea about this issue at all until now. Solidarity and determination will win the day!
As an avid “passer-through” and frequent user of the fantastic traditional stores, I find it quite sad that yet another piece of MY Britain is potentialy going to be taken away.
Pubs turn to harvesters / winebars, grocers turn to Tesco’s, we see it all over the south-east and more these days. Village life and it’s associated traditions are seriously under threat by these industry giants.
IF they get their way, I, for one, will not use their store and I urge everyone else to boycot them with the same accord. If one cannot stop the machines of economics destroying our culture and heritage, at least we can kick ‘em where it hurts – right in the wallet.
I agree with Andrew. Whether it’s Sainsbury or Waitrose, if are to have a store then there should be some competition. 3 Tesco stores within a few miles radius is ridiculous. I feel we do need a store as Alldays is totally inadequate and sad – something much bigger than that but substantially smaller than what Tesco propose to keep the catchment area only to the village and to keep traffic to a manageable level. Oh, and opening to 11pm is ridiculous.
It would be good to see how big the proposed plan is in comparison with the Sainsbury’s and Tesco stores in Leatherhead.
And I disagree with Wendy that to allow Waitrose and not Tesco is snobbery. The difference is that Waitrose was consulting with Ashtead residents to find out what they wanted rather than bulldozing their plans through without caring what the residents desire. In addition, there are already 2 Tesco stores within 10minutes drive and Waitrose would provide the high quality that matches the village atmosphere and the other high quality retailers in The Street and in Lower Ashtead.
Hi there, Do you know if Tesco will have another opportunity to put their side across? I know something went on at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall a while back, but unfortunately I couldn’t attend due to work commitments.
If you don’t mind though, as someone who does not drive, due to epilepsy, a bigger store(not necessarily Tesco, but who am I to discriminate? I think to allow Waitrose in but not Tesco is snobbery), closer to home would actually be ideal for me. Frankly the Tesco Express is useless and the customer service is nil and I know that this is not in line with Tescos in general.
The one thing about the Tescos proposal that does concern me is the traffic issues. I don’t think that Ashteads roads are built to handle large amounts of traffic and I’m guessing The Marld will also be affected. I have to walk up this road every morning and night, and as it is, I feel lucky to get home alive, especially as there is no lighting AT ALL on the road.
Anyway, I look forward to reading how this develops. Kind Regards

HOW MANY MORE STORE CAN THEY GET AWAY WITH!
Just shows what garbage Tesco are.
We all know that it will get the go ahead as someone on the council will take a back hander to make sure it does.
