Car park campaign puts the brakes on Tesco development

ANTI-Tesco campaigners in Ashtead have been buoyed by the support of a government minister.

Chris Grayling, Employment Minister and MP for Epsom and Ewell, which includes Ashtead, gave his backing to a campaign to protect the Ashtead Peace Memorial car park during a visit to the Christmas Market held there.

Save Our Car Park, organised by Save Ashtead’s Village Environment (SAVE), follows a planning inspector’s decision that a development by Tesco could only go ahead once Mole Valley District Council relocated 74 long-term spaces from the car park.

But with many business, shopping and recreational users relying on the car park, opposition to the relocation is strong…
