MORE than 90 per cent of villagers oppose a new Ashtead supermarket if it means the end of long-stay parking at a central site, campaigners claim.

A survey posted to locals by Save Ashtead’s Village Environment (SAVE) received more than 2,000 replies – and 91 per cent said long-stay parking at Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall should be kept.

The news is a blow to Tesco, which won planning permission for a 750 square metre store at the adjacent site – 53-57, The Street – last August following a public inquiry.

Permission was given on the condition that 74 long-term parking spaces were relocated by Mole Valley District Council, but council leader James Friend says this will not happen unless local people support it.
