OPPONENTS of Tesco’s applications to build a store in Ashtead are setting up a campaign for funds to pay for their planning fight.
Tesco has begun appeals against the decisions of Mole Valley District Council to refuse two applications for a supermarket in The Street.
The first, turned down in March 2009, was for a store with a 1,115sq-m sales area, while the application refused by a single councillor’s vote in February of this year would have had a 750sq-m sales floor, amounting to 815sq-m including the checkouts space.
A government planning inspector will now decide whether the council was correct in its decisions, with a public inquiry due to start on July 20.
The goal of Ashtead Residents’ Association (ARA) and campaign group SAVE (Save Ashtead Village Environment) is to raise £25,000 to pay for a planning specialist and a barrister to represent their case…

A date has been set for the inquiry which is set to decide whether giant retailer Tesco will be allowed to build a store in Ashtead.
The inquiry is due to take place on July 20, in Ashtead, and will have the likes of former Epsom and Ewell MP, Chris Grayling, submitting information to support the resident’s case against Tesco.
Ashtead Residents’ Association and campaigning group Save Ashtead Village Environment (Save) have now launched a joint appeal for others in the area to help with the costs of a planning specialist and a barrister, to represent the “local residents’ interests”.
Paul Le Versha, Chairman of the ARA said: “We are disappointed that Tesco has not revised its proposals to something more appropriate but has decided to appeal clear and sound decisions which have strong community backing.
“We are determined to do the best that we can to fight these proposals. We will work closely with SAVE and other community representatives to fight for a development which would be an asset to the Village. Tesco’s proposals are simply too big…

It was the last day of March and spring should have been in the air. But the weather had other ideas. A cold rain fell on a dreary afternoon as I motored to Ashtead in search of afternoon tea. It seemed more like January than the day before the start of April.
I purchased a ticket from the car park machine behind the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall and wandered up the wet alleyway leading to the main shopping street. A dog in a parked car barked at me in a frenzied fashion as I passed the steamed up windows of the car.
Happily, as I turned the corner into The Street, I noticed Palmers Cafe-Deli, which looked warm and inviting on a wintry day.
It was quite late in the afternoon so I enquired what time the establishment was open until…
